Judo

History

Judo was founded in Japan,1882, by Professor Jigoro Kano who envisioned it as a modern way of becoming physically and mentally fi t through disciplined training. Judo was the fi rst martial art introduced into the Olympic Games (1964) and the Commonwealth Games (1990). The sport of judo is designed for both males and females from the ages 8 to 88 years. Judo involves throwing and tactical play rather than striking or kicking. It is an excellent activity to increase physical fi tness, self-esteem, and self-defence skills.

What do you do?

Judo is practiced with safety in mind. Training is on mats and participants are taught to fall without getting injured. Flexibility, stretching and strengthening exercises are part of every Judo training session, and are always more interesting than individual gym workouts.

Why do it?

Judo is an internationally consistent style with a common language so you can enter any club in the world and instantly be able to participate. It's a great way of meeting new friends. Judo is a real contact sport of close-in grappling and is very beneficial self defence.
